A masochist watches all of Gundam- Part 1: Mobile Suit Gundam 0079
Warning: Spoilers within for the Gundam show under discussion and potentially any prior Gundam show in the watch order.
Introduction
Hello, I'm /u/OutZoned and I'm watching all of Gundam for the first time. I know, I'm crazy. Even crazier, I decided that I'd write my thoughts on each show. There's little discussion of Gundam on /r/anime, which isn't surprising given the age and scope of the franchise, so I thought I'd help fill the gap.
Obviously, I don't pretend to be the least bit definitive. I'm a Gundam noob and just your average Joe, not some god handing down critiques from on high. I just want to get people talking about Gundam, and I think we can do that.
Here's the watch schedule I devised. Each part will be linked here as I finish them. For a more detailed explanation of why I'm watching in this order, please visit my first post, which is the first link in the list.
Mobile Suit Gundam 0079
Mobile Fighter G Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing/Endless Waltz OVA
After War Gundam X
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED/Destiny
Mobile Suit Gundam 00
Mobile Suit Gundam Age
Turn A Gundam
Gundam Build Fighters/Try
Gundam the Origin (only after it ends)
I've already finished 08th MS Team and IGLOO Part 1 and I'll be writing those posts up soon enough.
With all that out of the way, let's jump into the rest of the post.

Ran: 1979-1980
Episode Count: 43 (42 dubbed)
Timeline: Universal Century 0079
0079 is the story of Amuro, the first Gundam pilot, and his exploits during the One Year War between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon. He is forced to leave his space colony home and join the crew of the White Base, a prototype spaceship, and join the war as a child soldier.
Amuro and the rest of White Base crew experience love, loss and hardship through the lens of never-ending battles against the Zeons and the relentless pursuit of Char Aznable, the ace Zeon pilot known as the Red Comet. Over time, Amuro becomes aware of his abilities as a Newtype, a mutant with psychic powers.
If 43 episodes is too long for you, you can also watch the compilation movies. I haven't seen them, but they supposedly cut out a lot of fluff.
Reaction and Analysis
Watching Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 is like staring into a time machine in more ways than one. Just about every facet of the show is extremely dated, from the animation and music, to the characters' appearance. The era it was produced in is reflected in the way it portrays war, politics and gender roles. The show's age is all consuming and you can't help but view it in context of decades of technical and social advancement.
It's got this other-worldly texture to it, like you're not really there. You're just an observer, watching history unfold before your eyes. It's almost like you stumbled upon a history book from a bygone age, turning pages filled with legends of Newtypes and the Red Comet.
The show simultaneously feels like a Saturday Morning Cartoon and gritty war drama. You have this bouncy, dance-like, opening theme that immediately gives way to explosions, dismemberment and PTSD. And it's all animated in bright, cartoony, colors.
Don't be fooled. If you want death, you'll get tons of it here. The show is not afraid to kill off major characters without a moment's notice. Although, you may want to avoid the very spoiler heavy episode previews, as they often open with “This character dies...”
The show drops you right into the action. From the get-go the White Base in on the run, the Zeons are attacking and the characters are barely hanging onto life. Each individual episode has a relentless pace, even if the overall plot develops slowly.

In fact, that's one of my main criticisms of the show. I wish that more episodes would take the time to slow down and focus more on the characters. 0079's best character episodes, “Char and Sayla” and the three-episode arc with Kai and Miharu are what the show needed more of, in my opinion. As it is, much of each episode is dedicated to action, action that often reuses animation and can get repetitive.
Despite that, I really enjoyed the cast of characters. Except from Hayato, every member of the White Base crew was distinct, memorable and enjoyable to watch. Yes, I even enjoyed Fraw. Bright, Amuro, Sayla, Kai and Mirai all had solid character arcs that were easy to become invested in.
However, with the exception of Kai/Miharu, the romances were largely ridiculous. I would say that romance was easily the worst part of the show. It was worse than the reused animation and cheesy dialogue.
The romances generally came out of absolutely nowhere, just in time for said romantic interest to be killed off. Kai/Miharu plays into this a little bit, but Miharu is developed far more effectively than the other romantic interests. We see her own personal struggle over the course of several episodes and their relationship is critical to Kai's development from selfish asshole to stand-up guy.
Mirai/Sleggar is the pair that comes out of left field the most. Sleggar is a huge jerk all the time. He makes sleazy comments, “accidentally” gropes people, and literally backhanded Mirai (watch this show if you like slaps). And yet we're supposed to believe that she's fallen in love with him? Sorry, not going to be able to do it.
On the other hand, the buildup to Amuro's Newtype abilities is extremely well done and very-well foreshadowed, to the point where I didn't have a problem with him psychically speaking to the entire crew in the finale. While the buildup to the abilities is strong, the actual execution of the reveal is not. He basically goes from not knowing he's a Newtype, to knowing and there's no scene where he's shown coming to a full realization.
If romance is the worst part of 0079, then world-building is easily the best. By the end of the show, you've traversed space colonies and crossed a war-torn earth. You've been to military bases, space fortresses, mines, refugee camps, and the empty craters of towns long gone. The world feels alive and constantly in motion, and there are so many minute details that by the end, you feel like you've only scratched the surface of what the Gundam universe has to offer.
There's the little touches like needing specialized atmospheric re-entry capsules, or the way that gravity is handled that just make me geek out with sci-fi appreciation.
It's the same feeling I got watching Star Trek TOS and the original Star Wars trilogy. There's that same sense of wonder, that feeling that you're only getting a part of the story, that there's so much left to discover about this world.
If you're willing to forgive old animation, sexist dialogue (“It must be because you were raised by a man” or literally everything involving Sleggar, Mirai and Mirai's fiance), and nonsensical romance you'll get a show that feels very much like Star Wars mixed with Star Trek and giant robots. That's part of why I enjoyed it despite the flaws.
There's something about a mecha with a beam sword that awakens my inner child and makes me grin like an idiot. I'm still humming that opening.
